Unit One: Methods of Investigating: Hand Drawn Type & Font Making

Having received feedback on the progress of my observations and experiments, I felt the most necessary next step was to progress the use of typography to communicate conversations and moments of interpersonal communication witnessed at The Good Mixer.

In order to do this, I took an initial ‘organised’ digitised sketch from my pages of sketched investigation, and gradually began to negate up the letter forms – informed by found type artefacts at the site itself.

Having sketched very rough letterforms, I refined them further in to a hand-drawn typeface using digital brushes in procreate.

I felt that this was a successful step forward in refining my observations, as the typeface itself, due to my continued applied research, was linked to both my own observations and the place itself, while communicating visually moments of my time investigating the space. I therefore chose to expand on this, adapting further organised sketches in this typeface.

From here, I expanded to a full alphabet of uppercase letters

At this point, I received feedback from my tutorial group, seen here

This feedback largely stated that this font, while well made, was potentially a step back from the success of the illustrations. In order to rectify this, I decided the next steps in visualising this project outcome should focus on continued implementation of the illustrative elements of my initial observations.
